This post provides an exciting and challenging opportunity for a clinician to contribute to the development of the Dementias Platform UK (DPUK), a major MRC-funded initiative which aims to accelerate research progress on dementias.

Your role will be to develop methods for the identification of neurodegenerative diseases in DPUK cohorts, particularly UK Biobank ( UK Biobank is an international research resource based on data from 500,000 UK adults. The post will be based in the UK Biobank Chief Scientist’s team at the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh.

This post is a rare opportunity to get right in at the heart of two internationally leading research resources and is ideal for a clinician wishing to train in epidemiology and obtain skills in clinical research methods, data science and statistics.

You will have a good medical degree, have completed your pre-specialisation medical training and qualifications, and be aiming for or have committed to speciality training in a relevant area (e.g., neurology, general practice, geriatrics or public health). Excellent communication and organisational skills, the ability to work flexibly in a large multidisciplinary team, and a proactive approach to problem solving and changing priorities are essential. Experience of critical appraisal of scientific papers, conducting research, or writing scientific papers would be an advantage.

This post is full-time, to start as soon as possible and available for two years in the first instance. Applications from candidates who wish to work part time or on a sessional basis are also welcomed.

For an appropriate candidate there will be the possibility of registering for and completing a higher degree (PhD or MD), applying for a personal research training fellowship, and / or extending the post.
