Imperial College London is a science-based institution with the greatest concentration of high-impact research of any major UK university. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (www.ee.ic.ac.uk/) at Imperial College is one of the top EEE departments in the country (ranked 1st in the 2012 Sunday Times Good University Guide, and the 2014 REF evaluation), with expertise in a number of areas relevant to the advertised post including machine learning, intelligent robotics, signal processing, human robot interaction, and cognitive systems. The Department’s Personal Robotics Laboratory (www.imperial.ac.uk/personalrobotics), led by Professor Yiannis Demiris, is a team of 20 postdoctoral, PhD and MSc researchers, and has significant expertise in Human-Robot Interaction, humanoid robotics, machine learning, user modelling and computational models of brain processes.
The post is funded by the European Commission’s H2020 project PAL (Personal Assistant for Healthy Lifestyle, www.pal4u.eu) in collaboration with academic and clinical partners across the EU. Successful candidates will be required to carry out a research programme in the development of intelligent humanoid robotic systems and mobile device avatars capable of interacting with young diabetic users and supporting them in the management of their condition. You will be responsible for developing machine learning algorithms for acquiring predictive user models that support the action selection process. In addition, you will be expected to submit publications to prestigious refereed journals and conferences, and contribute to demonstrations of the research to interested funders and stakeholders.
For appointment at Research Assistant level you must have a good undergraduate degree/MSc (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or related subjects with strong mathematical and computational core
For appointment at Research Associate level you will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Mathematics or related subjects.
You should have previous experience in the application of machine learning to one or more of: predictive user modelling, preference learning, personalisation, robots, avatars, and/or human robot interaction. You must have excellent programming skills in C/C++ with a demonstrable record of experience in implementing substantial algorithms. You must have excellent mathematical skills and the interest in applying them to create real systems that help people. You must enjoy working in teams, and be able to communicate with people from different backgrounds, including medical personnel and other academics from different disciplines.
Candidates that have not started a PhD will be given an opportunity to register for one.
