You will be a software engineer working in our Science programme with opportunities in weather and climate delivering world-class weather and climate prediction and observational systems. The Science programme ranges from blue-sky research through to preparation for operational delivery. All of this relies on bespoke software systems developed by us and our many partners and collaborators.

Job Purpose

You will either be working in a science team, or software engineering team, to deliver numerical models, applications and services to facilitate our science. Our scientific applications and observing systems run on world-class systems, including a £97 million supercomputer, and will soon generate 200 TBytes of scientific data per day. You can imagine the technical challenges we face exploiting the science, computing and data for the benefit of society. There are elements of software development, maintenance and support in many of these roles. We value both creativity and a disciplined approach to technical development.

Job Responsibilities

Current areas of responsibility, roles and functions include:

  • Development of Infrastructure for an Exascale-ready Atmospheric Model
  • Monthly to Decadal Operational Forecast Implementation
  • Earth Observation Satellite Software Engineer
  • Development of Global Ocean Forecasting Systems
  • Development of Common Infrastructure for Research and Operational Systems
  • Atmospheric dispersion and Air quality
  • Developing and supporting regional climate models
  • Development and support of a Climate Data Processing Framework
  • Development of systems for disseminating data to the international climate modelling community.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  • An honours degree (2:2 or above) in a mathematical, physical, computational science or related discipline, or an equivalent level of professional experience in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience of developing, maintaining or supporting software. Programming languages of particular interest include Fortran, Python and C/C++. Describe your level of skill by example.
  • An aptitude to apply good software engineering discipline to coding leading to improved software quality.
  • Strong technical problem solving skills as demonstrated by an aptitude for understanding and adapting complex applications. Describe the level of autonomy.
  • Evidence of being able to work with a team of scientists and technical staff to deliver effective solutions. Provide details of the role and the science understanding required.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  • Postgraduate qualifications in a mathematical, physical, computational science or related discipline
  • Scientific computing experience of relevance to the Met Office. In particular, experience of: OpenMP and MPI; Fortran 2003 object-oriented programming; Scientific Python; development in a Linux or Unix environment.
  • A specific knowledge of applications, environmental models or observing systems used and developed within the Met Office science programme.
  • A proven ability to utilise Environmental Data and handle common Environmental Data Formats from those models or observing systems.
