Senior Database Engineer (Oracle Application DBA)

Cardiff University - Portfolio Management And IT Services

You will work as part of a professional service delivery team dedicated to the provision of a quality-driven and competitive Information Technology service to staff and students within the Corporate, Administrative, Academic Research and Learning and Teaching functions of the University.

As a Senior Application DBA, you will be expected to take ownership of the full lifecycle of database application design and delivery and provide authoritative application DBA consultancy to customers. You will have an understanding of integrating Oracle with enterprise architectures and application frameworks such as J2EE, SOA, PHP, Hibernate & connection pooling, in addition to experience of large-scale Data Mart/Warehouse implementations.

You will have a major role in the management and development of the University’s existing Oracle estate and you will be expected to contribute to the overall strategy and design patterns for this area. You will be expected to play the lead role in the management of Oracle upgrades and provide effective support to application teams during upgrades of the University’s major corporate systems. Working with application teams to optimise performance is a key part of the role and you will bring extensive knowledge of Oracle internals, SQL and PL/SQL and best-practice to diagnose and resolve issues such as misconfiguration, and poorly structured queries.

You will have experience of providing engineering support for critical production databases in an enterprise environment and will have a good understanding of business continuity management for Oracle databases - operating across multiple data centres and using virtualisation and HA technologies such as Veritas clustering.

The scope and volume of demand for the database service is growing, so you would be expected to work effectively with other members of the team, providing cover where necessary with other technologies. You will have opportunity and support to build your experience and skills in these areas - which include SQL Server, PosgreSQL and MySQL.

Salary: £40,082 - £46,414 per annum (Grade 7), plus attractive defined-benefits pension and 37 days per annum holiday entitlement.

Interviews to be held on Monday, 14 November 2016
