The BGS is one of the world’s leading geoscience research organisations, and the leading provider of geological advice and information in the United Kingdom. It operates both in the UK and internationally. The BGS is seeking to recruit two highly motivated scientists into its core geological teams, one to be based at BGS Keyworth near Nottingham, and the second to be based in BGS Edinburgh at the Lyell Centre, Heriot Watt University campus.
You will have a PhD or a similar level of industry experience in geology that demonstrates an ability to work over a wide range of scales and terrains, and integrate diverse sets of data. As a skilled fieldworker, you will be capable of synthesising your observations and data into coherent, 3-dimensional interpretations of the rock mass and its superficial cover. You will be highly numerate and comfortable with modern desk-based and mobile informatics technologies. You will be able to undertake independent and team-based studies, develop innovative solutions to geological challenges and link these to applications and impacts for BGS clients and wider stakeholders. As a confident communicator and team worker, you will be able to lead areas of work, interacting with non-specialists, scientists and experts in other disciplines. You will be equally confident in writing published scientific papers and delivering reports, maps and models for BGS clients. Skills and experience in fields such as structural geology, sedimentology, Quaternary geology, 3d geological modelling and geological interpretation of geophysical data are desirable, but not essential.
The posts will be based in the UK, but will involve fieldwork in the UK away from our centres, and overseas. You must be able to travel and be able to work in remote, sometimes challenging environments, a driving license valid for use in the UK is essential.
This is advertised as a full time post but we will consider applications from those who require more flexible arrangements.
