An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Scientist to work within our new spectral laboratory in collaboration with researchers in ICRAF (Kenya).
The project presents an attractive opportunity to help develop the new GeoPhenomics science and its applications in Europe, Africa and elsewhere.
Rothamsted Research is the Headquarters for the Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS), which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. One of the applications of the high throughput spatially georeferenced analyses of African soils by AfSIS is the tailoring of fertiliser nutrients to the specific conditions of the local soils. How the crop phenotype is influenced by the soil conditions and fertiliser addition is what we now call GeoPhenomics, and this represents a new approach to soils and crop diagnostics. Rapid and inexpensive types of analyses has been promoted by the innovative use of spectral techniques that work with dry soils and crop tissues using pXRF, MIR and XRD techniques without the need for expensive and time consuming digestion in concentrated acids.
The successful candidate will learn and operate the new techniques, teach others, and perform bioassays of plant growth under controlled conditions in the excellent facilities that we have at Rothamsted. They will work with statisticians/informaticians on experimental design, in analysis of the data and interact with the team members of AfSIS.
You will either hold a 1st degree in soil, environmental or plant sciences and a PhD in soil science, agronomy, environmental science or plant nutrition. The ability to travel to project meetings in Africa is essential.
This full time, fixed term role is funded until 30 November 2018 and salary is in the range of between £29,842 to £32,315 per annum.
Interviews to be held: either 21 or 25 November 2016.
