Salary: Competitive Professorial Grades plus £7,000 p.a. Head of School allowance

Keele University is renowned for its exciting approach to higher education, innovative research, beautiful campus, strong community spirit and excellent student experience. With a turnover in excess of £134 million, 10,000 students and a total staff of approximately 2,000, the University provides high quality teaching and research across a wide range of academic disciplines.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences is embarking on an ambitious programme to develop and enhance its research portfolio. As part of a restructuring to accommodate strong student recruitment and a growing research profile, the Faculty seeks a new Head to lead the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences. The successful candidate will be appointed as a Professor of Chemical Sciences on an indefinite basis and have a strong research profile and leadership credentials. The appointment as Head, which carries an additional salary allowance, will be for three years in the first instance, with an option to extend for a further two years.

As a research leader in their own field, the successful candidate will lead the School in developing a visible and distinctive research identity which complements the established excellence of its learning and teaching environment. We welcome applications from candidates with research backgrounds that can complement the existing areas of strength within the School, including candidates with expertise in physical and inorganic chemistry, organic and medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, computational chemistry and clean energy. However all areas of expertise will be considered that would help strengthen existing expertise at Keele and provide leadership in the longer-term development of research.

The School of Chemical and Physical Sciences is a growing and interdisciplinary home to eight individual degree programmes in the areas of Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry, Forensic Science, and Physics and Astrophysics. The School has an excellent reputation in learning and teaching and both Chemistry and Physics are ranked 1st in the NSS.  The School comprises 38 academic staff, is home to 58 PhD students and is responsible for delivering programmes to 385 undergraduate students as well as having postgraduate taught provision. The Chemical Sciences and Astrophysics Research Centres are pursuing internationally recognised research. Staff in Chemistry were an integral part of Keele’s REF submissions to A3 Allied Health Professions and B15 General Engineering, and were in the top 20 submissions in the country in REF2014. Keele’s Astrophysics researchers had 86% of their outputs ranked as internationally excellent or world-leading in REF2014, placing them in the top 20 in the country.
