Over the past five years, Universiti Brunei Darussalam has been on an exciting progressive journey of change, from what is fundamentally a teaching university to a first class international university of excellence in teaching and research. Our vision is to be among the top 50 universities in Asia.
In education, we have introduced a new undergraduate degree program, Generation Next (GenNEXT), which emphasizes broad-based learning, programmes that cross-disciplinary boundaries and real world experiential learning in the form of the Discovery Year.
In research, UBD is fortunate to have the strong support of His Majesty’s government in providing funds and infrastructural support to advance research. This entails substantial increase in research funding and the development of infrastructural support as well as ample dedicated leave time for research and conferences.
In April 2014, UBD experienced another milestone with the announcement of the new salary scheme for the recruitment and retention of quality academic staff.
As Brunei Darussalam’s Premier National University, UBD invites suitably qualified candidates to join us in shaping global future leaders and contribute as a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Research.
The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam is in a phase of active expansion. This has created an opening for an Environmental Studies Scholar with a research and teaching focus on mainland and/or archipelagic Southeast Asia. The area of specialization is open but broadly trained interdisciplinary candidates within the environmental humanities/social sciences are particularly welcome. This may include a focus on human-cultural-environment interactions; societal impact on eco-systems and/or changing patterns of climate and land use. An ability to situate research especially on Borneo in the wider context of sustainable development is also welcome. The successful candidate will contribute to both the Institute and Faculty Arts and Social Sciences in terms of research, supervision and some limited teaching responsibilities at both undergraduate and graduate level. Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant discipline from a reputable university, a demonstrable track-record of excellence in research and a proven capacity to initiate, lead and collaborate on interdisciplinary research. The Institute has established ties with a number of universities and other key bodies globally alongside funding provision for research projects and graduate student scholarships. The aim is to establish IAS as a major knowledge hub in a growing network of Asian-based research establishments. Successful applicants will be eligible for UBD’s new internationally competitive and tax-free salary scheme. The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment position with IAS and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
