University of Southampton - Engineering Mats & Surface Engineerg Group

Location:  Highfield Campus

Applications are invited for a 3 year research position in the field of micromechanical analysis of fibre-reinforced composites, leading to the award of a PhD degree. Candidates must fulfil the eligibility criteria for this award: not residing in the UK for at least 24 months in the last 3 years, and having less than 4 years of research experience.

This position is part of FiBreMoD (Fibre break models for designing novel composite microstructures and applications), an Innovative Training Network with 6 academic and 6 industrial partners in across Europe. The key challenge of this PhD project is to develop high speed 3D imaging of fibre break processes, primarily via X-ray computed tomography. The work is closely aligned with modelling efforts, with a view to providing major refinements in both the fundamental understanding of composites failure, and the design tools required for ultimate engineering applications. The position includes 3-months of secondment at Imperial College and KU Leuven and a 2-month secondment to Toyota Motor Europe.

You will have (or be about to obtain) a good undergraduate (or equivalent) degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or Mathematics. Eligible applications will be assessed on the applicant’s academic qualifications, aptitude for advanced experimental studies, technical skills, communication skills, and motivation for the project.
