Network Services Engineer

The University of Reading is in the top 1% of Universities globally and is supported by a central IT department committed to delivering quality services to students and staff. A number of new services are being introduced to deliver an enhanced experience to customers from across the University.

The Network Services Team manages the wired and wireless networks across the University. It has responsibility for over 60,000 network ports, a wireless infrastructure with more than 12,000 concurrent connections connections a day from a wide range of devices and two ten Gbps connections to Janet plus. Services are provided for a wide range of uses: high volume research data, new teaching and learning services and even accommodation networks.

We are looking for a Network Services Engineer to join the team to help deliver these services, in particular focusing on the wired and core network, managing the network to deliver highly reliable and performant network services.

You will have:

  • Experience of hands on working within large and complex wired IP data network environments.
  • Excellent knowledge of network concepts and key network protocols e.g. OSPF, STP, BGP, DHCP.
  • Good understanding of network security and best practice.
  • Understanding of industry best practice relating to change and release management.
  • ITIL Certification to at least Foundation Level or equivalent experience.
