The School of Humanities offers an exciting and challenging academic program covering the disciplines of Classics & Ancient History, Archaeology, History, Indigenous Studies, Peace Studies, Philosophy, Political & International Studies, and Studies in Religion. Classics, established in 1938, is one of the foundational disciplines of the University and we now offer a popular and intellectually rigorous undergraduate and postgraduate program in Classical Languages and Literature (Greek & Latin) and Ancient History (Greek, Roman, Near Eastern). Currently the School is seeking a dynamic academic for the role of Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History. 

About the role
The successful candidate will be a collegial and productive individual with a passion for teaching and research in the field of Ancient Egyptian/Near Eastern History, as well as for teaching Classical Greek Language.  The incumbent will collaborate with staff in the discipline of Classics & Ancient History to secure the Egyptian/Near Eastern History and Classical Greek Language offerings available in trimesters two and three of the teaching program, enhance the discipline's research profile and community engagement, and work with staff across the School.

Duties

  • Teach Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern History at all levels of tertiary education
  • Teach Classical Greek Language at all levels of tertiary education
  • Be available to teach both on campus and online in trimesters 2 and 3 (including intensive schools), commencing in 2017
  • Produce research publications and apply for competitive grants
  • Supervise Honours and Higher Degree Research students
  • Complete administrative duties commensurate with the position of Lecturer Level B
  • Engage with staff in Classics & Ancient History and across the School of Humanities 

Skills & Experience
As a Lecturer in Classics & Ancient History you will have: 

  • A PhD (awarded) in Classics, Ancient History, and/or Egyptology
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Classical Greek Language and Ancient Egyptian/Near Eastern History in both on-campus and online environments
  • Demonstrated research profile commensurate with a Lecturer Level B and a commitment to attracting competitive grants
  • Commitment to team work and administrative duties
