Postdoctoral Research Associate

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Tropical Archaeobotany and Archaeology to support the work of Professor José Iriarte (Exeter). This full-time European Research Council funded post is available on a fixed term basis from 1st March 2017 to 30th June 2018. The successful applicant will work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a new four-year project entitled PAST ‘Pre-Columbian Amazon-Scale Transformations’.

This is an international, interdisciplinary project integrating a range of state-of-the-art techniques in archaeology, archaeobotany, paleoecology, soil science, botany, landscape ecology and remote sensing to investigate the influence of the late pre-Columbian (1000-1492 A.D.) land use on Amazonian forests, the impact of the 1492 Columbian Encounter (CE) and its modern legacy through the comparative study of pre-Columbian land uses in different regions of Amazonia. The post will include participating and/or directing archaeological excavations directed at recovering plant remains and plant processing tools with the project’s collaborators; undertaking phytolith, starch grain and charcoal analyses from  archaeological sites and soil-depth profiles in vegetation plots; writing archaeological reports and submitting results for publication in several leading international journals; liaising close with the Exeter-based palaeoecology and remote sensing/botany PDRAs to closely integrate palaeoecological, remote sensing and archaeological data. The project also entails assisting with the supervision of undergraduate, MSc and PhD student projects, as well as teaching classes in Paleobotany, laboratory and forensic practical sessions, in addition to the contribution to other modules. The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes and communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically.

Applicants will possess PhD (or nearing completion) or equivalent in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of appropriate research methods and techniques.
