An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to undertake work in artificial intelligence and philosophy as part of the newly founded Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (CFI). The post-holder will work on the Leverhulme Centre’s “Kinds of Intelligence” project, working with Professor Murray Shanahan at Imperial College London.
CFI is a new, highly interdisciplinary research centre addressing the challenges and opportunities posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in both the short and long term. Funded by the Leverhulme Trust for 10 years, CFI is a joint venture between Cambridge University, Imperial College London, Oxford University, and the University of California – Berkeley (USA). The Centre also has close links with industry partners in the AI field, with policymakers, and with many academic disciplines.
CFI’s “Kinds of Intelligence” project draws on psychology, neuroscience, computer science, cognitive robotics, and philosophy to further develop and critically assess notions of general intelligence used in the field of AI. It aims to map the space of possible intelligences — biological, artificial, and hybrid — in order to better understand the future prospect of human-level artificial general intelligence and to improve assessments of its benefits and risks.
Candidates should have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field and should provide strong evidence of potential for research and publication at the highest level, as well as an interest in the long-term methodological, philosophical, and ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence. The work required is highly inter-disciplinary, and the ideal candidate will have a technical background in artificial intelligence or machine learning, as well as other appropriate academic experience, for example in a relevant branch of philosophy or in comparative (animal) cognition. The post-holder will be expected to play an important role in CFI’s interdisciplinary activities, including discussion groups, workshops, and conferences, both in London and in Cambridge.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £31,740 - £33,370 per annum.
