Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (TB), is a close relative of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of TB in humans. While much is known about how M. tuberculosis causes disease in humans, there is a significant knowledge gap in our understanding of the virulence strategies used by M.bovis to cause infection and disease in cattle. In this project, funded by the BBSRC, we will directly address this knowledge gap in bovine TB host-pathogen interaction with the overarching aim to identify M.bovis specific virulence adaptations.
