Chair in Linguistics (French, German, Spanish/Portuguese)

University of Bristol

The School of Modern Languages at the University of Bristol seeks to appoint an exceptional scholar to the Chair of Linguistics. The appointment will be made in one of the following language areas: French, German, or Spanish/Portuguese.

The strategy of the School of Modern Languages is to build leadership capacity in Linguistics following recent appointments to Lectureships in Sociolinguistics in French (2015) and in Hispanic Studies (2014). Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with expertise in sociolinguistics, although all subfields will be considered.

The appointee will provide strategic leadership at Departmental and at School levels, and will contribute to the research and teaching missions of the Faculty of Arts and the wider University. The School invites applications from candidates with an outstanding record in research and in research-rich education. The appointee will have an international reputation in his/her field and a substantial track record in the supervision of PhD students. He/she will have strong plans for research collaboration in linguistics and a vision for developing and consolidating grant capture.

The appointee will take up the Chair of Linguistics with effect from 1 September 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.

For further information, please contact Professor Susan Harrow, Head of School (s.r.harrow@bristol.ac.uk) or Professor Robert Vilain (Robert.Vilain@bristol.ac.uk)

The selection process is provisionally scheduled to take place between late January/end of March 2017.
