Chair in Anthropology

University of Bristol - Department of Archaeology and Anthropology

The University of Bristol seeks to appoint an outstanding scholar and academic leader to the post of Chair of Anthropology, with effect from 1 September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Following an internal review of its Department of Archaeology and Anthropology in summer 2015, the University is implementing an ambitious plan to refocus and expand existing activity within a ‘four field’ approach to anthropology. This will consolidate the unique position of the University of Bristol in the UK in offering social anthropology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology and archaeology together under one roof, and provide unprecedented opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and initiatives. The post offers a rare opportunity for a candidate committed to a broad four-field approach to anthropology to lead the Department as it expands its profile in both teaching and research, and shape the Department’s future by capitalising on existing scientific research strengths and curriculum innovation.

The University welcomes applicants from all fields of anthropology, especially those whose research will add to our interdisciplinary themes in globalisation, adversity, and adaptation. The successful candidate will have the vision and energy to lead the development of four-field anthropology at the University of Bristol. He or she will have an excellent international research reputation with a track record of attracting funding, and the ability to build a strong culture of research and innovation in anthropology.

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Professor Kate Robson-Brown, Professor of Biological Anthropology:

The selection process is provisionally scheduled to take place between late January/end of March 2017.

The closing date for applications is 11.59pm on Sunday 18th December 2016.
