The University of Portsmouth has a world leading reputation in multi-disciplinary research at the interface between biological sciences and bioengineering. This strength comes from the university’s waterside location and the associated links between the Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences (IBBS), Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) and the Bioneer Bioengineering Group. Recent successes have included the identification of limpet teeth as the strongest biological material known.

Applications are invited for a Senior Research Associate to work on an innovative project sponsored by an industrial client. This interdisciplinary project aims to advance our understanding and application of mineral-protein structures using cell and tissue culturing as well as molecular techniques. We aim to recruit a Senior Research Associate with skills in cell culture to develop and optimize assay for the culture of odontoblasts and associated cells from marine organisms. This exciting project will exploit state-of-the-art facilities at IBBS and IMS as well as the 3D bioimaging facilities established by the Bioneer group within the newly created Future Technology Centre. Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent experience in cell/molecular biology with experience of cell culture.

Informal enquiries are actively encouraged and can be made to Prof. Darek Goreki (, Prof. Alex Ford ( and Prof. Asa Barber (
