Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Dr Lindsay Beevers (Associate Professor in Water Management). The position is part of a NERC funded project on Sustaining Himalayan Water Resources in a changing climate (NE/N016394/1). It will be based within the Institute for Infrastructure and Environment in the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society at Heriot-Watt University. The successful appointee will be involved in the delivery of independent and collaborative research, which will determine freshwater ecosystem service relationships in the Beas and Sutlej river systems (India).
The position is part of a wider project which is employing a combination of state-of-the-art modelling, field studies and observation to gain improved process-based hydrological understanding of Himalayan water resources in order to deliver a whole systems approach to basin modelling for future management of water resources. The successful candidate would be required to independently design and undertake fieldwork which determines the freshwater ecosystem services currently delivered in the study basin with a particular focus on the provisioning (e.g. fish), supporting (e.g. habitat) and cultural (e.g. religious) services.
On completion of the fieldwork, the candidate would be required to analyse the data in order to develop process based relationships which can be built into the basin wide model. It is anticipated statistical, data driven approaches will be employed here, and the candidate would liaise with the wider project team in order to facilitate this smoothly.
The appointee is expected to have a strong background in water resources and river management, a PhD in Civil Engineering, Water Resources, Freshwater Ecology, Hydrology or a cognate discipline. Evidence of experience in the design and delivery of fieldwork programmes in challenging environments is highly desirable, as well as a strong statistical grounding (e.g. experience using R, minitab or equivalent).
The postdoctoral appointee will also be expected to contribute to internal teaching programmes and technical workshops and conferences as appropriate. The appointee will be involved in providing support to PhD students within the HWU’s Institute for Infrastructure and Environment.
A PhD in Civil Engineering, Water Resources, Hydrology or Freshwater Ecology (or cognate discipline) is essential together with a background in designing and undertaking fieldwork in river systems.
