POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES
Aalto University invites applications for a Postdoctoral researcher position in the field of science and technology studies. This is a joint position between the Department of Physics and the Department of Management and the project will be led by Prof. Patrick Rinke (http://physics.aalto.fi/en/groups/cest/) and Prof. Nina Granqvist (https://people.aalto.fi/en/nina_granqvist). The project is part of the Academy of Finland funded project Database Driven Science for New Materials (DataSciMat) and its objective is to carry out an extensive socio-economic analysis to identify the necessary steps to turn the emerging field of database driven science into a lasting scientific paradigm.
Materials science has been the driver of our high-tech society. The key challenge for future progress is to accelerate materials design by implementing new discovery paradigms and by fusing academic theory, experimental science, and private industry developments. Database driven material science and machine learning are emerging as such a paradigm. The objective of the DataSciMat project is to identify expectations and motivations in the field of database driven materials science, possible stimuli or hindrances, as well as broader socio-economic dynamics that relate to various professional groups involved, and to the wider context.
The post-doctoral researcher will conduct extensive fieldwork to identify key players, gatekeepers, incentives, inhibitors and promoters in this nascent field. Fieldwork includes interviews and other data collection in Europe, the US, China and Japan, as well as online surveys. Mobility stays at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in California have been agreed as part of the project. The post-doctoral researcher will then conduct extensive inductive, grounded analyses.
