We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Assistant in Synthetic Biology to join Professor Huang’s research group at the Department of Engineering Science (Begbroke/Central Oxford). The post is funded by EPSRC and is fixed-term from 1 March 2017 to 30 June 2019.
This project will establish a new bioengineering platform for synthetic biology – the SimCell (Simple and Simulated Cell) – that performs advanced bioengineering functions in an easy-to-use, safe-to-handle, and reliable-to-build manner. A SimCell consists of a cell shell from a natural cell and a deigned and simplified chromosome. The aim is to develop SimCells as programmable chassis and establish the foundation for engineering applications of SimCells.
The main job duties of this postholder will include: design circuits controlling formation of Escherichia coli and Ralstonia eutropha based SimCells; constructing biosensing SimCells; engineering SimCells to carry out alkane biosynthesis.
You should possess a PhD (or near completion) in molecular microbiology, molecular biology or biochemistry. You should also have a good knowledge and strong background on genetic engineering, and metabolic engineering (ideally synthetic biology).
