Senior Solicitor - Property Lawyer

University of Hertfordshire - Office of the Vice Chancellor

Grace: AM2
FTE: This is a full time position working 37 hours per week (1.0 fte)

An exciting new full-time, permanent in-house opportunity for a Senior Solicitor has arisen at one of the UK’s leading business-facing universities. The University of Hertfordshire’s mixture of academic excellence and engagement with the commercial world sets it apart from other universities, making it a lively, forward-thinking place to work.

As a Senior Solicitor, you will report to the Director of Legal Services and University Solicitor and will provide legal advice to senior managers and other internal clients on a wide range of property and commercial law matters. You will have particular responsibility for overseeing all property and construction related activities within a busy and diverse business unit which covers Estates and the University’s hospitality matters.

Your day to day work will include the following:

  • property related transactions including commercial transaction, leases, licences and sale and purchase agreements
  • organising and managing matters relating to commercial property and other commercial legal arrangements
  • advising, as the need arises, on other areas of law which are relevant to the work of the University, its partners and subsidiaries
  • assisting and supporting colleagues within the Legal Services Office who specialise in other areas of law on the property aspects of their transactions.

You should be a proven communicator at senior level who is able to explain complex legal issues to non-lawyers. You should be comfortable dealing at short notice with often unpredictable legal issues. You will need to have a strong commercial acumen and a definite ‘can do’ attitude. Key responsibilities will include drafting and negotiating a variety of property and commercially-orientated agreements, so you will need to have excellent drafting and other technical legal skills.

You will be a qualified solicitor who has ideally had strong training, in both commercial and property law matters, from a recognised law firm. You will most likely have at least 5 years’ post qualification experience (although applications from exceptional solicitors with less experience will also be considered). Experience of doing legal work for the Higher Education sector would be highly desirable, as would experience of working in-house.

Closing Date: 13th December 2016

Quote Reference: 014192

The University offers a range of benefits including a pension scheme, professional development, family friendly policies, child care vouchers, a fee waiver of 50% for all children of staff under the age of 21 at the start of the course, discounted memberships at the Hertfordshire Sports Village and generous annual leave.
