Applications are invited for one of four clinical teaching & education fellowship posts, suitable for registered medical practitioners who will have some post-qualification experience by July 2017, who wish to gain training and experience in a general clinical specialty, in medical education. The posts offer exciting opportunities for developing clinical and teaching skills and gaining a formal qualification. The posts are for two years commencing August 2017.

These Teaching and Education Fellowship posts are for two years commencing August 2017 – July 2019. The posts will be based at the Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) campus in Johor Bahru, Malaysia from early August 2017 until end of July 2018. From August 2018 to July 2019 inclusive they will be based in the UK.

Seven NHS Trusts are collaborating closely with Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed Malaysia) in hosting this novel programme. The Trusts are part of Newcastle University’s regional medical school and play a major role in undergraduate teaching. The NHS Trusts are: County Durham & Darlington; Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals; North Cumbria University Hospitals; North Tees & Hartlepool; South Tees Hospitals; and Sunderland Royal Hospitals and Northumberland, Tyne and Wear Mental Health Trust.

The first year of the posts will be based at the state-of-the-art campus and at associated clinical facilities within Johor, Malaysia as part of the clinical teaching faculty of NUMed Malaysia. The duties will comprise teaching of clinical knowledge & skills to all stages of medical students. The second year will be within the Northern Deanery, at a hospital within one of the partner Trusts, and will have both clinical and teaching responsibilities. A range of clinical specialties is available, and post-holders will be fully funded by NUMed Malaysia to undertake the Newcastle University Postgraduate Certificate and/or potentially the Diploma of Medical Education depending upon circumstance.

The posts are covered by the terms and conditions of service of NUMed Malaysia in the first year, and for the second year by NHS Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the General Whitley Council Conditions of Service.

Salary scale: as appropriate to the level of the post-holder on the NUMed salary scale (Year 1), and will be RM7468 or RM8401 per month depending on qualifications and experience. Malaysia is deemed to be 25% cheaper to live in compared to the UK based on established indices. The terms and conditions include a return economy class flight from the UK and an accommodation allowance. Year 2 will be at the standard NHS clinical scale (Year 2). The post holder will be eligible for any additional duty hour payments due for on-call work.
