The Agriculture and Food Development Authority - Teagasc - Rural Economy & Development

Location: This programme encompasses two research departments (Agricultural Economics and Farm Surveys including the National Farm Survey, and Agrifood Business and Spatial Analysis) and the Farm Management and Rural Development Knowledge Transfer Department. Staff are located primarily in Athenry, Co. Galway and Ashtown, Dublin.

It is expected that the Head of Programme will be based at Teagasc, Mellows Campus, Athenry, Co Galway.

Grade/Salary: Senior Principal Research Officer (SPRO), with a starting salary of €92,134 per annum plus a Head of Programme term allowance of €8,681 per annum. The current salary scale is €92,134 to €105,440.

Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government policy.

Post Type: Permanent Appointment, with the Head of Programme assignment being for a five year term, which is renewable (subject to competition).

A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function:

Leadership, development and strategic management of the rural economic research and development programme including economics and rural research, the National Farm Survey, economic benchmarking, farm business development and rural innovation activities. The role involves extensive liaison with policy makers, other state agencies, farm representative bodies and other rural organisations, and businesses operating in the agri-food sector. It also involves developing relevant relationships outside of Ireland in the EU and beyond.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • PhD in Economics or business or in another relevant discipline.

While a PhD is an essential requirement for this post, equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline, or relevant knowledge transfer experience, may be deemed acceptable solely at the discretion of the Director of Teagasc.

  • 5 to 10 years experience managing or leading relevant research/knowledge transfer programmes or teams.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • A post graduate qualification in leadership, management or administration

Interview Details
