Based at the Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS), this programme supports students undertaking interdisciplinary research at the forefront of international efforts to understand these interrelated problems of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease: diseases that pose an increasingly significant health problem worldwide.
The programme brings together basic and clinical scientists with expertise in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, endocrinology, murine and human physiology, neurophysiology, vascular biology and epidemiology, all specifically tailored for research into metabolic and cardiovascular disease. It allows students to develop the intellectual and practical knowledge required for modern life-science research. An important focus is how to apply and translate this knowledge to human health and disease.
Structure and organisation of the programme:
The programme offers a stimulating educational experience designed to nurture independent and creative scientists.
During the first year students develop a wide range of first-hand research experience through three mini-research projects in different laboratories, accompanied by core seminars and training programmes. These elements are designed to introduce students to potential PhD supervisors and to provide experience of specific research areas and techniques.
Students are expected to choose a laboratory for their PhD research by June 2018 before writing a PhD research proposal. In August of the 1st year, work is submitted for an MRes degree before starting a 3-year PhD.
What funding does the programme provide?
This programme is funded by the Wellcome Trust, including a starting stipend of £19919, fees for home /EU and overseas students, research expenses, and contributions towards travel and training.
Fixed-term: 4 years.
