Imperial College Advanced Hackspace Fellow x2

Imperial College London - Dyson School of Design Engineering/ Advanced Hackspace

Fixed-term appointment available for up to 12 months

Since its creation in 2014, the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace (ICAH) has created a unique environment for students and staff to engage in community-driven prototyping and disruptive technology development. ICAH aims to connect innovators and inventors with the tools and expertise they need to realise their creative ideas. The rapid growth of the Hackspace network over the last two years – 1,400 members to date, with another 100 joining every month – demonstrates the demand for this resource amongst the College and its flourishing start-up community.

To continue to grow, and to build on ICAHs existing achievements, Imperial College has commissioned the construction of a new £4.5M permanent 2000m2 Engagement and Creativity Hub (ECH). This facility will be based at the new 25-acre Imperial College White City Campus (right next to White City underground station) which aims to co-locate scientists, industry partners and entrepreneurs, to speed the translation of scientific breakthroughs into societal benefit.

This is a unique venture, unprecedented both in terms of scale and ambition within a university environment and will include a bio-wet lab, molecular synthesis laboratory, woodwork/ metalwork/ electronics workshops, a digital manufacturing studio and a design studio. These cutting-edge facilities will be linked directly to an expo-centre/café next door and hot-desking/hot-house space on the floor above in the ECH and will complement the manufacturing spaces that already operate under ICAH’s umbrella. When the ECH opens in 2017, ICAH will constitute one of the largest prototyping networks in the world and our aim is nothing short of becoming the best place in the world to turn ideas into working prototypes.

In addition, we are looking to recruit a dynamic team of Hackspace Fellows who will play a crucial role in establishing the ICAH operation at ECH and then assisting in the smooth operation of the new facility from day to day, looking after machines in the prototyping area, supporting users in prototyping and project development and supporting events, hackathons and workshops as may be required. These positions would suit dynamic individuals who are keen to be at the forefront of networked science and community driven research ventures.

Applicants should have a PhD in engineering or physical sciences (or equivalent), Bioengineering or equivalents welcomed. Strong applicants with non-PhD backgrounds will be considered.
