The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
A research technician position is offered by the EMBL Hamburg Unit to work within the Integrated Biology Infrastructure Life-Science (XBI) Laboratory at the new European XFEL Experimental Building in Schenefeld near Hamburg, Germany. XBI is an international consortium and the EMBL is one of its members.
The XBI laboratory is presently under construction, and once it is in operation it will provide support to the international life-science community for sample preparation and biophysical and biochemical characterization in the immediate proximity to XFEL instruments. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the lab preparation and implementation, and later on to provide day-to-day support to XBI users. The main task will be to assist users in biological sample preparation and characterization, and to help create a lab management structure that includes electronic systems for laboratory supplies and user experiments. The successful candidate will also contribute to maintaining the facility and its equipment including troubleshooting and coordinating servicing and repairs. As the XFEL instruments will be operated seven days per week 24 hours per day, there will some requirement on flexibility with working hours.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a track record as molecular biology (or related) research technician and have an appropriate educational background in a relevant field (biology, chemistry or closely related disciplines). Previous experience in use of biophysical instrumentation and sample preparation for structural studies will be an advantage. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with research teams in the facility are essential. Good knowledge of software applications for inventory, writing reports and presentations are also mandatory. In a multi-lingual environment, excellent command of English is mandatory and fluency in German and other European languages would be an advantage.
