As CO2 levels rise it appears we will be unable to keep average world temperatures below 2°C. This has profound implications for the environment, food production and human migration. One of the major tools to permit us to use our abundant fossil fuel resources is carbon capture and storage, which allow us to use the energy in those fuels without increasing the anthropogenic CO2 burden. Cranfield operates some of the largest pilot plant facilities for post and pre-combustion capture in the UK. It works extensively with industry and government to help develop and foster the use of such advanced technology.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an academic with extensive experience of high temperature pilot plant design and operation to join our team of researchers. Your expertise will complement that of international experts’ and should cover combustion, gasification or high temperature solid looping processes. You will be expected to have a deep background in combustion, gasification, Ca and chemical looping and/or high-pressure combustion and experience with high temperature fuel cells would be an advantage.

You will have a PhD in a related engineering area, and experience of winning research grants, running research projects, and working in multidisciplinary collaborations. You will have a track record of publishing high impact journal articles in one or more aspects of oxy-fuel, high temperature solid looping processes, or gasification. You will ideally have design experience of large pilot high temperature facilities at the 100 kW level or more. You will have a commitment to scientific rigour, a passion for solving applied problems, and enjoy engaging with experts and opinion-formers in academia, industry and Government. Ideally you will have experience in both an industry and academic setting.
