An opportunity has arisen for an individual who has experience of running and/or setting up their own business and has other external commercial commitmentsto develop a new strategy for Aston’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio.

As Director of Commercialisation, you will deliver a step-change in Aston’s IP income and commercialisation success and develop effective commercialisation processes, ensuring auditable decision-making and clear reporting of performance. Your primary role will be to develop a network of external investors to help Aston exploit its IP.

You will work with business development managers across the University who will help identify exploitation opportunities during their work with academics. You will ensure the University’s senior managers are aware of opportunities and fully informed of existing developments. You will also oversee the successful maintenance and administration of a cost-effective patent portfolio; this will require close collaboration with legal services and the finance department.

You will identify, assess and develop potential opportunities for the University to protect and exploit Intellectual Property. You will promote Aston’s expertise regionally and nationally, developing extensive networks of partners and investors.

You will be educated to degree level or higher qualification, ideally in a science or management discipline. You will have the ability to commercialise intellectual property and negotiate through complex relationships with people both internally and externally. A legal qualification with a focus on Intellectual Property would be advantageous.
