We are seeking two highly motivated researchers available from April 2017. These positions will be based within the Blackett Laboratory Astrophysics Research Group to work with Dr. Jonathan Pritchard as part of a dedicated group studying 21cm mapping of the Epoch of Reionization supported by ERC Starting Grant Award “FirstDawn”.

The context for this project is the near term prospect for using low-frequency radio interferometers, especially HERA and the Square Kilometre Array, to map the redshifted 21cm line of neutral hydrogen from the epoch of reionization and the cosmic dawn and similar projects using intensity mapping in other lines. This project aims to further develop the theoretical and statistical techniques needed to connect these observations into constraints on astrophysics and cosmology. Areas of particular interest are the application of Bayesian inference to 21cm observations and associated challenges of exploring a large parameter space efficiently, both as applied to interferometric observations and to all sky “global” experiments, such as EDGES and DARE. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the development of SKA EoR related activities in this area and to interact with other activities at Imperial on foreground removal and numerical simulation of reionization. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the Department’s teaching activities up to approximately half a day per week during the academic year, as appropriate. The position comes with funds for travel and computers.

A PhD or an equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience in physics, together with a strong background in statistics and/or astrophysics/cosmology is essential. Experience with coding, for example in astronomical data processing or cosmological simulations, is also essential as is knowledge of statistical techniques in their application to cosmology data. Experience with 21cm theory and data analysis would be desirable, but not essential as would a familiarity with the techniques of radio astronomy.
