Founded in 1592, Trinity College Dublin is at the nexus of tradition and innovation, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across 24 schools and three faculties: Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Engineering, Maths and Science; and Health Sciences.
As Ireland’s leading university, the pursuit of academic excellence through research and scholarship is at the heart of Trinity’s world-class education. Home to Nobel prize-winners such as scientist Ernest Walton and writer Samuel Beckett, Trinity draws visitors from across the world to its historic campus each year, including to the Book of Kells and Science Gallery which capture the University’s connection to both old and new.
Trinity accounts for one-fifth of all spin-out companies from Irish higher education institutions, helping to turn Ireland into an innovation-intensive, high-productivity economy. That culture of innovation and entrepreneurship is a defining characteristic of our campus as we help shape the next generation of job creators.
The new Director, Trinity Research & Innovation (TR&I), will play a significant role in the definition and implementation of the research, innovation and enterprise strategy of the University. He/she will have responsibility for the leadership and overall management of a professional team of staff supporting research development, contract management, technology transfer, entrepreneurship and enterprise partnership liaison.
The Director will be responsible for the delivery of excellence in internal support for Trinity’s academic community, and for successful liaison with government, external agencies, and corporations. Where necessary, the Director will engage in negotiations with external partners and University staff on major contracts, licences, intellectual property and spin outs arising from research. The Director will have competence in a broad range of skills and proven ability to motivate staff and drive change.
The Director is further charged with contributing to the development of the policies and structures needed to ensure the success of the unit on an on-going basis and ensuring that the services offered by the unit are provided in a seamless and integrated way underpinned by a culture of ensuring stakeholder satisfaction and value for money service provision.
The successful candidate will be required to implement Trinity’s research policies, facilitating value creation in research initiatives and supporting the academic community in their competition for external research funds. In promoting and sustaining an innovation culture within the University, the Director will be required to anticipate and identify novel opportunities for research and to foster interdisciplinary working and business and industry-academic interactions.
The post will be high profile and requires a commercially-minded individual who combines empathy with the culture of a world-class research intensive university with strong management, entrepreneurial, policy making, and negotiating skills.
