Position Summary

The National College of Art and Design, Dublin is Ireland’s leading provider of art and design education. It is ranked the 40th Art and Design College in the world as measured by academic reputation by QS.   NCAD is based on the site of the Powers Whiskey Distillery in the heart of the Liberties in Dublin’s city centre.  It has a community of 1,500 undergraduate, postgraduate and part-time students engaged in a wide range of study and research across the disciplines of Design, Education, Fine Art and Visual Culture. NCAD has been the most significant provider of art and design education in Ireland for over 250 years and is a recognised College of University College Dublin.

The School of Visual Culture occupies a central role within NCAD and engages with every student in the College. The School delivers a suite of visual culture programmes at BA, MA and PhD level, and supports the studio degree curriculum across all of the College (Schools of Design, Education & Fine Art). 

The School also delivers a dedicated undergraduate degree - a BA (Hons) Visual Culture - that is actively engaged with the national creative arts sector and with its immediate context, a university-level art and design college. The School delivers two long established and acclaimed Masters level programmes, the MA Art in the Contemporary World and the MA Design History & Material Culture. The School has an internationally engaged, research active staff, and supervises and co-supervises with studio colleagues the largest group of PhD candidates within the NCAD community. The School of Visual Culture also has strong collaborative relationships with key national cultural institutions such as the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and the National Museum of Ireland (NMI).

This post is an operational and strategic leadership role, driving the development of the School and playing a lead role in wider processes of change and development within the College as it strives to meet the challenges of new practice and a new education landscape.

Head of Faculty:  €84,573 – €100,153 per annum (new entrant): €76,116 - €90,138

*Subject to all new entrants to public sector as of 01 January 2011

Appointment will be made on appropriate scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.

Appointments will be made to the first point of the above scale in the absence of experience from a Department of Education and Skills approved Institution.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Engage with relevant developments in the field of visual culture and ensure that the School’s academic provision reflects best practice
  • Engage with relevant educational/cultural bodies including playing a leading role in the ongoing progress of the alliance with UCD.
  • Further the development of the School/College through active engagement with the visual culture/education sectors through research/publication, conferences and lectures, and participation in relevant external relations
  • Engage in continuing professional development by research, industry engagement or professional practice

Programme Development

  • Take overall responsibility for the formulation of academic development to drive strategic change
  • Lead on programme development to ensure that the School provides inspirational, high-quality learning through traditional/innovative delivery methods
  • Lead and manage the validation process of undergraduate and postgraduate courses
  • Ensure that the School delivers outstanding learning, teaching and assessment practice

Management

  • Lead and develop the academic team in the delivery of quality services/programmes within the College and manage all staff and student issues arising
  • Manage the budget/costs of the School within the assigned budget and embed a value-for-money culture within the School
  • College Strategy - implement and embed the College strategy within the School
  • Report to the Director on all academic and general management matters pertaining to the School
  • Represent the School of Visual Culture on College committees including the Senior Management Team
  • Chair all relevant meetings/programme boards; represent the School on Academic Council and other relevant internal committees

Teaching and Other Duties

  • Undertake teaching on current/future undergraduate, post graduate and professional courses
  • Carry out any other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Director (or other appropriate officer) from time to time

Selection Criteria 

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.  Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory

  • International profile within Visual Culture, incorporating research in art and design
  • PhD in Visual Culture or cognate discipline
  • Experience or knowledge of course, programme and module leadership, development and administration within a higher education environment
  • Ability to engage with and enable organisational change based on a well-developed vision for the future of Visual Culture
  • Evidence of engagement in research and/or professional practice and the ability to design, deliver and assess a range of modules in and related to specialist areas of research/professional practice
  • Enthusiasm for working in an interdisciplinary context across design, education and fine art disciplines
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development
  • Significant leadership and management experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Desirable

  • An understanding of the changing landscape within the education sector nationally and internationally
  • Demonstrable record of developing and maintaining intercollegiate links
  • Experience in working with digital technology and maintaining an active interest in related developments within the sector
  • Experience of developing and managing successful research funding applications
