Acting as a front line contact on a daily basis, our security teams play a key role in developing and fostering relationships with our students, staff and visitors to assist in promoting a community feeling on campus.
You will supervise a team of Security Officers and will report into one of the Security Duty Managers. You will be expected to deputise for the Security Duty Manager in their absence and to be familiar with all aspects of the role in order to provide an effective security service to the University's Medway site.
This role does not involve shift work and is predominately Monday to Friday day shifts. There will however be an expectation that you will be required to cover other shifts at our Canterbury campus infrequently. Appropriate notice will be given.
To be successful, it is essential that you:
- have a good general level of education to GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent);
- have experience of working in a similar or related security environment;
- have proven experience of managing potentially volatile situations and dealing with conflict;
- are able to demonstrate supervision skills;
- are able to motivate colleagues and lead by example;
- are able to make decisions, give clear effective instructions and work flexibly.
Although not essential, having a SITO qualification or SIA Certificate, would be desirable.
In this role, it is key you understand that situations must be dealt with safely and effectively, which means the duties outlined in the job description cannot be definitive. Situations will often require informed personal judgement calls and may (on occasions) necessitate ongoing attendance after official shift end times.
The Estates Department provides a number of essential services to the University of Kent and is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the extensive grounds and buildings; the security of the students, staff and visitors; transport and travel; a postal service and the telephone exchange as well as the University Design & Print Centre. It is also responsible for the buildings, new developments and construction projects both at Canterbury and at our Medway campus at Chatham Maritime and on the Chatham Historic Dock Yard.
