Research Assistant/Officer – Membrane Technology

This is a fixed term position to 31st August 2019 and salary will be on either the Grade 7 or 8 salary scale for Research Staff depending on the Academic Research profile which best matches your experience and achievements

Main Purpose of the Post

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the Royal Society funded project “Towards Water Sustainability in the Malaysian Agriculture Industry: Water Reclamation and Nutrient Recovery from Palm Oil Mill Biogas Reactor Effluent using an integrated Forward Osmosis Process” to support collaboration between Swansea University and University Kebangsaan Malaysia. (ref. no. IC160133). The primary purpose is to investigate the feasibility of using forward osmosis for the concentration of palm oil digestate including development of novel FO membranes and identification of the appropriate draw solute for FO digestate dewatering.

Main Duties

1. To investigate the feasibility of using FO for the concentration of palm oil digestate
2. To examine the factors contributing to the degradation of FO performance during the dewatering process
3. To develop novel FO membranes using a nanotechnology approach
4. To develop effective FO fouling prevention and cleaning approaches for optimal performance
5. To identify the appropriate draw solute (DS) for FO digestate dewatering and select the effective regeneration method for DS recovery
6. To analyze the quality of the reclaimed water for reuse and concentrated digestate as organic fertilizer for plant growth
7. To build a FO-DS regeneration system and to verify its practicality in treating palm oil digestate
8. To perform energy and economic analysis of the integrated FO-DS regeneration process in treating palm oil digestate
9. To collaborate with research partners including national and international travel. The post holder will be expected to spend some time with project partners in Malaysia.
10. To write journal papers for submission in ISI-accredited peer-reviewed journals

Essential Criteria

1. A degree in Engineering, Physics or a related subject
2. Experience in membrane technology and surface characterisation
3. Evidence of participation in collaborative research with external partners
4. Evidence of the ability to actively engage in and contribute to writing research papers, particularly for refereed journals
5. A demonstrable ability to conduct research in line with the objectives of the project
6. Evidence of planning skills for research projects

Desirable Criteria

1. A PhD in Engineering, Physics or a related subject
2. Evidence of experience related to forward osmosis, membrane fabrication and characterisation
3. Evidence of knowledge of the membrane technology sector
4. Experience of the water technology sector
5. Experience of data processing and analysis
6. Evidence of commitment to Continuing Professional Development
