The Division for Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics at DTU Space opens a new postdoc position to participate in our contribution to ESA’s ATHENA mission.

DTU Space is the leading institution of public space activities in Denmark. The mission of the Institute is to conduct research, development, public sector consultancy, education and innovation at the highest international level within the following areas: Space Technology & Instrumentation, Earth Observation & Geoscience and Space- & Astro-physics.

DTU Space has a strong position in observational astrophysics primarily based on space missions and several decades heritage of participation in astrophysical satellites. Operational satellites include INTEGRAL, PLANCK, and NuSTAR and we currently contribute hardware to the JWST, EUCLID and ATHENA missions.

The Division is carrying out research in several fields within space science, including high energy astrophysics. We are e.g. working with ESA to design the telescopes for the ATHENA mission, and the postdoc position is central to fulfilling our responsibilities in that context.

Responsibilities and tasks

The successful candidate is expected to work within the following areas:

  • Scientific research within X-ray optics for space telescopes
  • Design and development of X-ray optics
  • Mirror coating characterization using XRR, AFM, TEM, XPS, etc
  • Optimization and simulation of coating performance
  • Environmental tests
  • Technical reporting
  • Participation in experiments at syncotron facilities

Other content of the position:

  • Support DTU Space’s experimental facilities for high energy astrophysics missions


Candidates should have a PhD degree in science/engineering or equivalent.

Further qualifications:

  • Lab experience is an advantage
  • Scientific programming skills (C, IDL, MATLAB, UNIX, etc)
  • Interest in Astrophysics and Space Science e/engineering or equivalent.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is initially 2 years and employment is at the earliest opportunity.
