The Department of Journalism Studies is one of the major journalism research and teaching establishments in the UK. We are committed to a teaching and research programme that takes an increasingly interdisciplinary approach to the fields of journalism, political and public communication and digital media with growing emphasis on the barriers to freedom of expression and freedom of inquiry and the particular impact on journalism.
The Department is seeking to appoint a University Teaching Associate who can contribute to journalism workshop and newsday teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The post is available full time for 12 months. You’ll have plenty of recent newsroom experience across a variety of platforms, particularly digital, and may even have some experience of teaching journalism in higher education. You’ll be contributing to teaching students newsgathering, writing, fact checking, and interviewing as well as supervising the students’ journalism on live newsdays and within group and individual projects. You’ll be a story-getter and a storyteller yourself, know all the ways of getting to know communities and the things that matter to them and be up to speed on current issues facing journalists and journalism.
You will have a postgraduate qualification in an appropriate area (or equivalent) and experience of journalism in a variety of platforms, especially digital. Ability to provide group learning to undergraduate students using a diverse range of teaching methods and a proactive approach to student learning is essential.
