The Social Accountability project within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health has been motivated by the articulation of socially accountability within health care schools and the general movement by Universities to engage more with, and impact upon civil society. The project will help fulfil the University of Sheffield vision and enact its principles, especially in terms of partnership working, developing and expressing leadership, engendering ambition, creating distinctiveness and protecting the future. The project will focus on the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health but will also engage with the wider university, as resources allow, in order to make recommendations for both.
Research has shown that students have as yet limited awareness of social accountability, despite efforts to broaden the curriculum and educational methods (McCrea & Murdoch-Eaton 2014). This is likely to be reflected in many other university departments. It has been suggested that departments (and faculties) need to have explicit values and a strategy that reflects social accountability, ensuring that graduates become competent in tackling inequality, by directly engaging with local communities and engaging in political advocacy. This project will work with regional community organisations, local people and agencies and Schools across the Faculty developing collaborative areas of work to tackle inequality, promote wellbeing and in doing so produce more socially accountable graduates. This initiative which will enable staff and students to bring their expertise to bear on health, social and environmental concerns defined by local people, especially those in poorer /marginalised communities.
The Project Manager will ensure that the project is delivered on time and to a high standard. You will convene and report to the Project Steering group and oversee, plan, facilitate and undertake where appropriate project work and collate the final report.
