Medieval History at Manchester is a dynamic field owing to a tradition of pioneering research and world-class resources. The John Rylands Library, Deansgate, is recognized as one of the most important collections of medieval and early printed materials in Europe. The John Rylands Research Institute is a centre of excellence for medieval studies. Chetham's Library is the oldest chained-library in the UK and has important holdings in late-medieval manuscripts and early printed books.
Medieval History at Manchester is currently recognised for the diversity and quality of its research, which covers a broad chronological, geographic and thematic range. Particular strengths lie in Anglo-Saxon, Carolingian, German and Mediterranean history. The study of Medieval History remains popular among its undergraduates and postgraduates and continues to attract high quality students. As a result, there is currently a thriving medieval postgraduate research community, several members of whom have received highly competitive funded awards.
In REF 2014, History outputs were placed joint 4th nationally. Manchester historians have a strong record of attracting external research funding, and currently direct or participate in several major ESRC and AHRC projects, as well as receiving income from such funding bodies as the Leverhulme Trust.
You are an outstanding scholar with strong leadership skills, a clear sense of strategy, and a collegial approach. You will have an outstanding record of academic publication in Medieval History, compatible with inclusion in our submission to REF 2021. You will be expected to have a proven track record in attracting external sources of research funding, providing research leadership and have a clear plan for future grant applications.
You will contribute to existing undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including the MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies. These team-taught courses are subject to review and revision at regular intervals in order to incorporate the interests of new staff. At Level 3, you will devise and teach a specialist course based on their area of research expertise. Professorial colleagues are expected to undertake administrative and research leadership roles.
