Professor: On the professorial salary scale and commensurate with skills and experience
East 15 Acting School currently has over 750 students and provides training for the professional theatre and media industry. A department of the University of Essex, and accredited by Drama UK, it offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and certificates.
We are seeking to appoint either a Reader or Professor to develop the School’s research capacity whilst also overseeing a new undergraduate programme in Theatre Making.
Duties of the Post
At Reader and Professor level the appointed person will be expected to make a significant contribution to both the research and the teaching activities of the School, as well as providing research leadership as the founding Director of Research. They will undertake research, supervision, teaching, marking, examining, and associated administrative duties at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
In addition this post includes the role of Director of Research for East 15 for a period of 3 years renewable subject to University regulations and definitions. This will be the first such appointment at the school and the post holder will provide strategic leadership of our planned research environment, supporting the Director of the School in all matters relating to research including the appointment of new academic staff. The launch of a research strand at East 15 is accompanied by the commencement of a new Undergraduate programme (BA Theatre Making). The post holder will lead this programme.
In addition for appointment as a Professor the applicant must pursue world leading and internationally excellent research activity (as understood in the context of the Research excellence framework), to research leadership in securing, in collaboration with colleagues as appropriate, external funding through research grants or contracts to support a well-developed and high-profile research agenda. At Professor level the candidate should also engage in successful strategic leadership to enhance both educational excellence and research activity of the School, the University and beyond.
The post is based at the Southend-on-Sea Campus however it is likely to require regular travel between the Southend-on-Sea and Loughton Campuses.
Qualifications/ Skills required
The successful candidate will have a strong and successful background in research with a recognised reputation in this field as well as experience of teaching at HE level. A PhD (or one awaiting examination) in Theatre / Drama or a related discipline prior to taking up the appointment, or professional experience demonstrating comparable research skills is essential for this post.
It is also essential that the candidate has Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the commitment to gain this at an appropriate level within the first three years of employment. The candidate should also have evidence of a well-developed research agenda with a publication record or equivalent research outputs, and future research plans to produce outputs, suitable for submission to the REF 2020 (at 3* or above).
These requirements are for both a Reader and Professor.
In addition for the appointment as Professor it is essential that the candidate has a substantial record of internationally excellent, world-leading research in the field with demonstrable impact of research and a well-established research agenda with International recognition. Also at Professor level the candidate should also be able to demonstrate the ability to attract research funding through successful grant activities and to manage research projects appropriately.
