This is an outstanding opportunity for a Chair in Algorithms at the University of Sheffield. Working in the Department of Computer Science, you will lead our rapidly expanding Algorithms Group.  The group focuses on the design and analysis of algorithms which provably solve computational problems efficiently.

The Department of Computer Science is embarking on an ambitious growth strategy following our strong performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, in which we were ranked 5th out of 89 computer science departments in the UK.

We seek to appoint a Chair in the design and analysis of algorithms, broadly defined, with specialist expertise in an area including, but not limited to:

  • randomised algorithms
  • streaming algorithms and sublinear-time algorithms
  • combinatorial optimisation
  • approximation algorithms and parameterised algorithms
  • distributed computing
  • algorithmic game theory

In the role you will conduct personal research of international standing independently and collaboratively. You will design, deliver and assess high-quality teaching programmes, and will provide strong academic leadership, across the Department and the wider University.

The post has an exceptional package of benefits, including funding for two PhD students. You will have a reduced teaching load for two years, to allow you to focus on building the research group.

You will hold a PhD in Computer Science or a related area. As well as experience of conducting research in algorithms at the highest level, you will have a sustained record of securing research income.  You will also have experience of developing and delivering high quality teaching at a variety of levels, and have high professional standing.

The University is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from a diverse range of applicants. All applicants will be considered entirely on the basis of their relevant merits and abilities.
