CELFS English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Co-ordinator

ELFS is an ambitious Centre within the University of Bristol and works in line with the principles of development, reflexivity, autonomy, collaboration, transparency and transferability at all levels of its operation.

Established in 2011, our original remit was based around three core areas:

  1. Pre-University programmes
  2. Intensive summer courses
  3. Provision for students studying at the University (both ‘international’ and ‘home’)

These still stand, but all areas have grown considerably, and the medium-term should see more of the same.

As a start, you will need to be a good tutor, confident enough that you think you can teach virtually all levels and all variants of EAP / Academic Literacy, and extremely comfortable in the creation of material, both at an individual level but also motivating and guiding others. It’s also a given that you’re qualified and have sufficient experience to persuade our team of tutors to follow you. We will also expect you to have views on where you want a future Centre to ‘be’, and some ideas on how you think we’ll get ‘there’.

You will be surrounded by extremely able colleagues and work with what you’ll hopefully see as a supportive management team. Saying that, it’s likely you will think there’s too much to do, so it’s key that you know from the start that an ability to juggle workload at the same time as helping tutors do the same is vital. We’re broadly happy with the direction the Centre is moving, but each person in a new role needs to add something to the mix, and that’s one of the things we’ll be looking for.

The advertised role is likely to be initially working alongside the current co-ordinator on the Pre-sessional programme, but as the Centre evolves with the demands of UK Higher Education, the co-ordination role is unlikely to stay exactly the same, hence an interest in all aspects of the Centre’s provision (and an awareness of this potential) is important. The key areas for development in the coming year include:
a) design of a discipline specific pre-UG pre-sessional for medics;
b) design of new unconditional pre-sessional provision.
