Temporary Lecturer in South Asian Archaeology (Part Time, Fixed Term)

The Department of Archaeology and Anthropology is seeking to appoint to a one-year Temporary Lectureship in South Asian Archaeology, working part-time at 0.5 FTE, from 1 September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Temporary Lectureship will be based in the Division of Archaeology. The successful candidate will have good experience of teaching at undergraduate and graduate level and will be responsible for co-ordinating, teaching and assessing the Department's undergraduate paper, Ancient South Asia II: Early Historic Cities of South Asia and MPhil paper G9: Ancient South Asia.

These papers introduce students to the formation and transformation of the cities, states and empires of Early Historic South Asia. They span the period from c. 800 BC to c. AD 500 and focus on themes such as urbanism and secondary state formation, collapse of civilisations the role of craft specialisation and production, art and iconography, and trade networks. The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of these themes and the archaeological evidence for settlement, socio-economic and political structures, craft technology the nature and significance of regional variation in the region.

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to teaching on other papers coordinated by colleagues in Archaeology at undergraduate and MPhil level.

The role holder will be asked to contribute to the Department's recruitment and outreach work, attracting the next generation of students to Archaeology, and will be expected to contribute to departmental meetings and committees as appropriate.

Candidates will need to show evidence of the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Good first degree and a doctorate in a relevant subject area (or clear evidence that completion of such a doctorate is imminent)
  • Evidence of ability to teach the subject effectively, and at all relevant levels
  • Ability to play an effective role in the life and work of the Department
  • Ability to work as part of a team

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for one-year, part time at 0.5 FTE, in the first instance with potential scope for extension for one or two further years subject to funding circumstances.
