Director of Commercial Services

University of Kent - Commercial Services

As a campus based university, Kent prides itself on providing an outstanding student experience. Integral to this is an excellent residential and catering offer and strong provision in Sport, Arts and Music. In order to sustain and enhance sector leading facilities, we need to generate income from our Commercial Services that can be re-invested to ensure our residential estates and their amenities remain attractive to students, staff and external visitors.

We are now looking to recruit an exceptional Director of Commercial Services, following the retirement of the previous post holder. Someone who has a passion for customer service, an excellent commercial record, and is now looking for a wider role where their contribution will make a real difference to the lives of our students, staff as well as our visitors.

This is not a job for the faint hearted: with direct responsibility for a budget of some £45m, over 6,500 bedrooms, 16 catering operations/outlets, a sports park, theatre/café and concert hall, and leading over 400 staff, this role provides both challenge and opportunity. As an experienced commercial services specialist, you will bring cutting edge knowledge to bear in improving the way we supply services, the value for money generated and the quality of our offer. You will require the skills to deal with sometimes tricky large scale commercial negotiations as well as smaller decisions that help maintain a high standard of day to day service for our customers and stakeholders. You will be accustomed to holding full accountability for results while also being happy to operate within an environment which is collegial in nature. Leadership and influencing skills are essential and a genuine interest in Higher Education, Sport and the Arts will not only ensure that you are effective but that you will enjoy the stimulating environment that a University setting can bring.

The range of customers and stakeholders (students, staff, vacation visitors and local community) and breadth of responsibility means that it is not just another commercial services post. You will be able to shape the future of our offer and deliver those activities supported by a well-qualified and motivated team of reports.

The ideal candidate will have a mix of private and public/social enterprise sector experience in a relevant commercial area (preferably hospitality or facilities management) and will have operated successfully at a senior level within a complex organisation. A degree and relevant professional/post graduate qualification is a requirement.

This is a full time on-going position with a competitive salary.
