Research Fellow: Mechanistic Studies of Dermal Xenobiotic Sorption

Duration of Contract: 5 years from October 2017

Qualifications required:
The applicant must hold a PhD in toxicology, pharmacology, or other related disciplines (e.g. biochemistry) and, ideally, have some experience of performing dermal absorption studies.

Description of the research activity and area:
The candidate would be expected to develop a novel (non-Fickian) model for predicting percutaneous absorption of compounds under realistic (finite dose) exposure scenarios. Work will involve performing in vitro dermal absorption studies with subsequent development of an in silico model to investigate the underlying mechanism(s) of percutaneous absorption.

The research would be conducted at the UH toxicology laboratories based in Ludgershall Wiltshire. There is no undergraduate teaching requirement attached to this post but maybe opportunities for post graduate teaching and supervision. However, the candidate is expected to meet the following research deliverables:

  • Review of literature and existing models
  • Conduct a series of in vitro dermal absorption experiments to investigate the novel (non-Fickian) model hypothesis
  • Develop and populate a model based upon experimentally derived data.
  • Test the robustness of this dermal absorption model using a wide range of chemicals.

Skills and experience needed:
The successful candidate will have knowledge, skills and experience of performing dermal absorption studies using standard diffusion cell methodology and should have a conceptual knowledge of in silico modelling. They should have experience of disseminating findings to scientific audiences, and publishing journal articles, preferably in the areas related to the fellowship. Experience in handling toxic and/or radiolabelled chemicals is highly desirable, but not essential. The post holder should have excellent oral and written communication skills in both spoken and written. At personal level, the post holder should be an approachable and easy going individual, who can establish good working relationship with team members, collaborators, and staff and students at the University. A driving license and willingness to drive is desirable.
