PhD Studentship in Additively Manufactured Composites

Imperial College London - Department of Aeronautics

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in the area of Additively Manufactured Composites within the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London. This project provides an exciting opportunity to work at the junction of two innovative technologies of our age: Composite Structures and Additive Manufacturing (also commonly referred to as 3D Printing).

The aim of this project is to fully understand the challenges associated with the manufacturing of (continuous and chopped fibre) composites additively. This project will contribute towards the development of a general manufacturing-simulation approach validated through experimental investigation to elucidate the constraints of the manufacturing process. There will be opportunity to translate this manufacturing process understanding into a computational tool to enable better exploitation of composites’ anisotropy for novel design paradigms. The project will directly benefit from the outstanding manufacturing and computational facilities at the Department of Aeronautics.

We are seeking a bright, highly motivated individual who has or is predicted to be awarded a first class or upper second class degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, or a relevant discipline.

Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to contact Dr Ajit Panesar ( and provide their CV and cover letter.

“Funding is available for UK citizens and EU citizens who have resided in the UK for the past three years. The studentship is for 3.5 years and will provide full coverage of tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of approximately £16,296.”

Applications will be assessed as received and all applicants should follow the standard college application procedure ( in addition to the application online also email your CV, cover letter, relevant project work and grade transcripts as a single pdf file to with “PhD application: Additively Manufactured Composites” as the subject line of the email.

Should you have any queries regarding the application process please contact: Ms. Lisa Kelly by e-mail:
