PhD Studentship: Parallel Computing for Advanced Engineering Simulations

Swansea University - Engineering & Mathematics

*This scholarship is part funded by the Welsh Government’s European Social Fund (ESF) convergence programme for West Wales and the Valleys.*

Swansea University is a UK top 30 institution for research excellence (Research Excellence Framework 2014), and has been named Welsh University of the Year 2017 by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

PhD scholarship for UK or EU applicants in the field of: Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

Subject study: Parallel computing for advanced engineering simulations

The project will research and develop a framework where the latest massively parallel computing engines (GPU’s/Co-processors) and multi-core CPUs are utilised within an engineering simulation system to accelerate targeted areas of the computational model. The nature of the PhD research work is multidisciplinary, involving mathematics, computer science and engineering applications in material, manufacturing and energy sectors. The PhD project is open ended with a large degree of freedom to explore further into several related directions in parallel computing, computer simulation, data analysis, and engineering applications. The project is collaborative between a large academic research team and a leading industrial partner.

Additional Funding Information

The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £14,198 p.a. dependent upon the applicant's financial circumstances.

Eligibility

Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in Engineering (civil, mechanical, aerospace, geotechnical engineering, or related subjects), Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics. They should also be eligible for Home/UK Fees (see http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/Information--Advice/Fees-and-Money/Wales-fee-status for more information)

Candidates with a background in engineering and physics (civil, mechanical, aerospace, geotechnical, or related subjects), computer science, and mathematics are encouraged to apply, and relevant MSc degrees would be appreciated.
