Project Cataloguer and Researcher (England and France 700-1200)

British Library

Fixed Term Contract for 1 year (starting September 2017)

St Pancras, London

The British Library is pleased to announce a one-year post for a Cataloguer and Researcher on the England and France 700-1200 Project in the Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts section of the Western Heritage Department. The British Library is collaborating with the Bibliothèque nationale de France to enhance access to and promote 800 pre-1200 manuscripts, half of which are held by the British Library.

This post is for a post-graduate researcher to catalogue and research pre-1200 Latin illuminated manuscripts to be digitised and to enhance existing catalogue records.  The post-holder will also prepare short summaries of the digitised manuscripts for a general audience, to be placed on the Library’s website.  Other tasks may include preparing blog posts, checking and publishing images, answering enquiries, presenting medieval manuscripts to specialist and non-specialist audiences, and other activities promoting the project.

The successful applicant will have a post-graduate degree, or its equivalent, in medieval history or art history, language, or other directly relevant field, together with specialist knowledge and research experience of Latin medieval manuscripts and their decoration.  Experience of cataloguing or describing Latin medieval manuscripts is essential.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills. The requirements of the role will involve summary cataloguing in a short period of time (an average of one manuscript per day) therefore an ability to work quickly and efficiently to strict deadlines is vital.  The ability to write concise, unambiguous, and accurate text in English for a general audience is also crucial, as is the ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and as part of a team.

Closing Date: 16th August 2017

Interview Date: 4th September 2017 - The selection process may include questions about the date and origin of a particular manuscript to be shown at the interview, and a short writing exercise.
