Research Fellow in Astrophysics

University of Sussex - School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sussex in the field of X-ray Astronomy and Observational Cosmology to work Professor Kathy Romer.

The successful candidate will take on the role of Project Scientist for the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS). They will be responsible for delivering the second XCS data release. This will include the exploitation of proprietary data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), plus public data from other sources. It will also involve the quantification of the XCS selection function.

The XCS Project Scientist will work closely with the XCS PI (Romer. They will lead science investigations of their own, including the extraction of cosmological parameters from the joint XCS-DES data set. They will also facilitate a wide variety of other projects being lead by XCS and/or DES collaborators.

There will be ample opportunities to get involved in future projects (4MOST, Euclid, LSST, Athena), and to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students. Applications are particularly encouraged from those candidates who wish to lead telescope and grant proposals.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to Kathy Romer (romer@sussex.ac.uk).

The University is committed to equality and valuing diversity, and applications are particularly welcomed from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in science and engineering at Sussex.
