Research Assistant

University of Kent - School of Politics and International Relations

The School of Politics and International Relations is seeking to appoint an ambitious and highly motivated Research Assistant for the project “Security Sector Reform and the Stability of Post-war Peace”. We would especially welcome applications from candidates with a quantitative methodological background.

This is a fixed term role for a period up to 30 April 2019 and part-time (15 hours per week)

The main aim of the project is to identify why Security Sector Reform (SSR) leads to post-war peace in some cases but not in others. SSR is commonly defined as changes in the structure and conduct of those state institutions responsible for the prosecution and punishment of non-legal manifestations of violence: the military, police, and judiciary. The project uses a mixed-method research design that connects theory-building case studies (done in the first half of 2017) with theory-testing statistical analysis.

As a Research Assistant you will be required to contribute to the delivery of the milestones of the project in terms of quantitative research on security sector reform in post-conflict countries. This includes collection of data, data processing, and analysis and interpretation of data on the topic. You will also be expected to make a significant contribution to the quantitative research on the topic.

To succeed in this role you will:

  • Have extensive training and qualifications in quantitative method and successful research skills and experience.
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly R, SPSS or Stata.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
