Postdoctoral Research Associate

University of Edinburgh - College of Science and Engineering - School of Mathematics

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral position in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics and Physical Oceanography. The position will be based at the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh, and is available to start at a mutually agreeable date before 31 March 2018.

The successful candidate will work with Prof J Vanneste as part of a joint research project with Prof W R Young (Scripps Institution of Oceanography). The project is devoted to the role played by internal waves in the energetics of the ocean. It will examine stimulated loss of balance, the process whereby wind-forced near-inertial waves and internal tides extract kinetic energy from the balanced mesoscale flow. The project combines the derivation and analysis of simplified theoretical models with numerical code development and simulations. The candidate will join the Applied & Computational Mathematics group of the School of Mathematics.

Applicants should hold a PhD by the start date, demonstrate an outstanding research potential and have a strong background in fluid dynamics and expertise of numerical modelling, evidenced by high-quality publications. Expertise in oceanography or atmospheric sciences is desirable.

Closing Date: 31 August 2017 at 5pm GMT
