Research Associate in the Fabrication and Validation of Implantable Ion Pumps (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Associate to design, fabricate and validate ion pumps for in vivo drug delivery, as part of a broader project to explore the use of organic electronic technologies in neural interfacing. The aim of this project is to make implantable ion pumps and validate them in animal models of neurological diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson's.

Neurological disorders, ranging from emotional disorders, such as clinical depression, to chronic movement disorders such as the Parkinson disease, represent a major health concern worldwide. The most common method to treat nervous-system disorders is the oral or intravenous administration of pharmaceutically-active compounds. Therapeutic strategies that control drug release spatially and temporally represent a significant step forward in terms of reducing side-effects and improving treatment efficacy, and will thus have significant clinical impact. The organic electronic ion pump represents one such strategy. Ion pumps rely on electrophoresis to transport ions from a source solution to a target solution through a polyelectrolyte film, i.e. an "ion bridge".

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in materials science. They will have a proven track record of collaborating with experimental neuroscience groups, experience with in vitro and in vivo models of epilepsy and/or Parkinson's. They will have demonstrable knowledge and experience of experiment techniques in organic electronics, implantable electronics, microfabrication and ion pumps.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.
